[1] Bab or Father was a title given to Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the first Prime Minister of Jammu & Kashmir.
[2] The card suit 'Clubs' is called 'Cherry' in Kashmir as ♣ resembles fruits attached to a single twig.
[3] The marla is a traditional unit of area that was used in Pakistan, India,and Bangladesh, originally one 160th of an acre. In India, the unit was standardized to 25 square yards. Marla is used here to denote a very small piece of land.
[4] MY Chapri, house boat owner.
[5] Alif, Be, Te: ﺍ ب ﺕ in Perso-Arabic alphabet.
[6] The reference is to Lalla Ded Maternity Hospital named after the 13th century saint-poetess Lalla Ded or Lalleshwari.
[7] ttarvesh is a pun of dervish; ttar in Kashmiri means a lie, fiction, deception. Thus, it means the opposite of dervish.
[8] Rishi Vaer of Garden of Rishis was a name given to the Kashmir valley in ancient times due to the multitude of saints living there.
[9] Rishi Mol Sahib was an ascetic saint from Anantnag District; his shrine resides at the heart of the Islamabad town in the eponymous Rishi Bazaar. Many people abstain from eating meat for a few days in a year, out of respect for this saint.
[10] Sabeena alias Champa Bai, who was running a successful sex ring with powerful clients.
[11] Inferior quality Amritsari shawls (from Amritsar, Punjab State) have been peddled as authentic high quality Pashmina shawls by none other than Kashmiri travelling shawl salesmen (pheri walas), thereby spoiling the market for Pashmina shawls.
[12] Mistry or mechanic. Here, seller of automobile spare parts.
[13] 1991 is notorious for mass copying in exams at all levels in the valley. Militants, some of them students, threatened examination superintendents so that they (and by extension, all students in the examination centre) could copy answers from 'question-answer banks'. Mass copying was very common till 1995.
[14] Yakhlaq means 'moral virtue' in Kashmiri. Incidentally, I have also witnessed it being used as a slang referring to the female bosom, such that saying “She has good yakhlaq ” secretly meant “She is well-endowed.”
[15] Mom or Maam, which is amusing since 'maam' means maternal uncle in Kashmiri.
[16] Beni Ttaatthi means 'dear sister' in Kashmiri.
[17] Dad is used here as a pun. 'Dad' or 'daid' means 'one-and-a-half' in Urdu.
[18] Pamposh or lotus, a reference to Kashmiri Pandits, who make offerings to their deities of marigold flowers.
