LULJETA LLESHANAKU [8.425] Poeta de Albania

Luljeta Lleshanaku

MORIR APRESURADAMENTE

Van muriéndose uno tras otro;

Memoria

No hay profecía sino memoria

lo que ocurra mañana
ha ocurrido hace mil años
del mismo modo, con el mismo final;

como lo hicieron antes;

No hay destino, sólo leyes y biología;

la trucha chapotea en el agua
los pinos respiran en las montañas.

Antipastorale, Eurorilindja, Tirana, 1999

cuyo final tan bien conozco:

la caspa dispersa por el cuello de su camisa;

‘¡Dame cualquier cosa –no importa!’

9

I.

E hëna është një këpucë teke;
me tjetrën, ndoshta po argëtohet qeni i lidhur tek porta.
Ata ngjajnë me thepin e pushkës në vijën e shënjestrës;

II.

kur vjen koha e dyzimit,
- dasmorët, bëjne nje hap prapa në histori
ndërsa kthehen te nesërmen, me sytë përdhe, duke i kërkuar lëkurët,
të zonjës së shtëpisë:
“E imja eshte krejt e bardhë, me manikur ne thonj!”

-riti i përnatshëm i bashkimit trup me trup,

IV.

Kur ime gjyshe erdhi nuse ketu,

V.

Lodrat e prishura ishin argëtimi im.
Zebra, karroca kineze e akullores me kurdisje,
bëra disa hapa mbrapa, instiktivisht, me thembra,
Ndërsa me njerëzit ishte tjetër gjë,
ata i ndërtova vetë. Njerëzit i desha,

VI.

VIII.

fikson karrigen e saj me krahë sfinksi përballë derës
Ajo i merr përshëndetjet me sy.

IX.

era predikon rreth e rrotull me zë hundor prej profeti te rremë.

***

Kur dashuria jep një shenjë...

Ajo futet ne rrjedhën e gjërave me arrogancë,

nje are e ardhur gruri
që pret për t’u korrur.

I thua vetes se je e mbrojtur,

ushtari i mirë

e ruan për vete.

Poemas en idioma albanés:

MISTERI I LUTJEVE

Në familjen time

Në shtëpinë time

qëkur tri breza zgjohen njeherazi brenda meje.

komuniteti ndërtoi nje punishte uniformash prej doku.

E stergjyshi. Nese ka ekzistuar nje i tille

une nuk ia di as emrin, ketu kujtesa pëson hiatus,
e me diktojne se cfare duhet te bëj

ashtu te larë me sapunin e lirë të perkohësisë.

Ata thjesht e riprekin boten permes meje

Negative Space

I

I was born on a Tuesday in April.

I didn’t cry. Not because I was stunned. I wasn’t even mad.
I was the lucky egg, trained for gratitude
inside the belly for nine months straight.

Two workers welded bunk beds at the end

of the delivery room. One on top of the other.
My universe might have been the white chalk lime ceiling
or the embodiment of Einstein’s bent space
in the aluminum spring bed above
flexible only at the center.

Neither cold, nor warm.

“It was a clear day,” my mother tells me.

It’s hard to believe

there were a few romantic evenings
when I was conceived, a buzz in the retina
and a red panty-like magma
decadently spilling
from a silver candlestick.

Infants’ cries and milk fever

turn to salt from the stench of bleach,
abrasive, unequivocal.

With a piece of cloth wrapped on the end of a stick,

the janitor, casually, extends negative space
the black and white tiles of the floor
like a mouth of broken teeth, a baleen of darkness
sieving out new human destinies.

II

1968. At the dock, ships arriving from the East

dumped punctured rice bags, mice
and the delirium of the Cultural Revolution.

A couple of men in uniform

cleared out the church
in the middle of the night.
The locals saw their priest in the yard
in underwear, shivering from the cold
their eyes questioning one another in disillusion:
“Wasn’t he the one who pardoned our sins?!”

Icons burnt in front of their eyes,

icons and the holy scriptures.
Witnesses stepped further back;
as if looking at love letters
nobody dared to claim.

Crosses were plucked from graves. And from each mouth

– irreversible promises:
dirt mounds the rains would even out
sooner or later.

Children dragged church bells by the tongue

(how did they not think of this before?!)
Overnight, the dome was demolished, suddenly revealing
a myriad of nameless stars that chased the crowd
like flies after a dead horse.

And what could replace Sunday mass now?

Women took out cauldrons in the yard.
Men filled up their pipes.
Against gravity, smoke rose up.
Nails in worn out shoes exposed stigmata
that bled in the wrong places –
a new code of sanctification,
of man, by man.

III

“Read!” – I was told. Who said that?

Angel Gabriel or my first grade teacher
with dark roots
underneath her bleached curls?
Language came fragmentary. Divided in syllables
spasmodic
like code in times of war.

“Continue where your classmate left off!”

A long sentence tied us to one another
without connotation as if inside an idiom.
Someone would get to read the noun, another the verb,
a third one a pronoun . . .
I always got the exclamation mark at the end
a mere grimace, a small curse.

A tall cast-iron stove below the portrait of the dictator,

puffing smoke from its temples, enough for everyone.
On the blackboard,
leftover diphthongs from yesterday or the day before
rubbing like kittens.

After dusk, I looked for another language outside the window

my eyes glued to a constellation,
(they call these types “dreamers”),
when my discovery might have been a journey to the past,
a galaxy already dead, inexistent,
the kind of news that needs millions of years
to reach me.

“Read!” – the angel shook me for a third time

her finger pointing to an arbitrary word
a million light years apart from its object. (It didn’t matter who was first).
A negative space that sketched my onomatopoeic profile
of body and shadow in an accidental encounter.

IV

Language is erosive.

It makes us recluses like wind in the canyons
where our paleontological eras
are easily made out.

Under the revised testament of my skin

bellows a gold-cast bull, an alluring object,
a need for attention.
Then comes the unleavened bread and a last supper,
which, surprisingly, is repeated several times
between ice periods.
Lower yet, Sodom.
I recognize it from the stench of sulphur.
I hold my nose. Freud would have done the same.
And then Cain,
a crow taught him how to bury his own brother . . .
And at the very bottom,
Adam’s gentlemanlike sin
under whom, scientists
discover earlier epochs of famine.

Between these, unidentified layers,

wanderings in the sand searching for a new prophet . . .

I try to understand my people.

Their language is plain. Some words, in fact,
were never uttered, like pages stuck together
freshly out of the press
even as the book has long sat on the shelf.

This, too, lives inside me

within insidious bubbles of air, negative spaces
where I can find little historical rest,
but also from where utter ruin may originate.

Little remains from the snow of three days ago.

Like a blanket forcefully pulled, it exposes
dog shit and the bruises of routine.

Negative space gives form to the woods

and to the mad woman – the silhouette of goddess Athena
wearing a pair of flip flops
and an owl on top of a shoulder.

It’s minus zero. The factory’s gate gnashes its teeth

behind the last worker’s back. Blowing noses, shivering, mucus . . .
A virus circulates round the workplace,
secretly, touching intimately one person after another,
a current of sensuality.
It softens the tone.

But nothing unites them more than their frailty

the one-size-fits-all shoes you must grow accustomed to
filling the extra space with cotton
or shrinking your ill-fitting toes.

VI

In Halil’s yard

rules were a sacrilege
his eight children entertained themselves
carrying famine on their shoulders
like St. Bartholomew’s flayed skin.
Starved little ones, filthy,
hazel-eyed,
three qualities that surprisingly go together
like sneezes
when suddenly exposed to bright light.

One’s famine was another’s consolation.

“Look at them! It’s a sin to complain; There’s much worse than us!”
But even Halil had his own formula,
the old woman, Zyra, “barren and paralyzed”,
the root origin of despair.

This was our highlands landscape,

multi-layered
where on the roof below their own
each family read an expiration date.

Schadenfreude was the only river

that made the mills turn.

But if this hierarchy were suddenly destroyed,

and our roof gave the first sign of ruin,
my mother planted tulips in the garden, white tulips,
our false image -
a scarecrow to keep predators away.

VII

Nearly nothing was mentioned in the letters he sent from prison,

just two lines, on top of the page:
“I am well . . .” and “if you can,
please, send me a pair of woolen socks”.

From them, I learned to read between the lines –

negative spaces, the unsaid, gestures,
insomnia that like a hat’s shadow
fails to shade one’s chin and ears.

And, in the photographs’ white background, acrophobia

which gives eyes their color: blue, green, grey
and ultimately, chestnut brown,
as, earthward, we lower our gaze.

I learned to read the empty spaces the dead left

– a pair of folded glasses
when reading is over and discourse commences.

Or the musical chairs game which is to say, love,

where there are less empty seats than people.
And if you don’t want to be the last one standing
you better predict when the music will stop.
(But who’s ever succeeded so far?)

Perhaps, a little practice can be useful in this case.

I don’t mean squatting, jumping, stretching muscles,
but listening to the same music every day from the start,
the same miserable vinyl record
so that you’ll recognize its cracks
before it recognizes your own.

VIII

Midnight. Snoring,

meaningless sounds that char like graffiti
the side of the wall that belongs to no one.
So what place are we in? What dimension?
Who foots the bill on a time like this without lambs or sinners
when even angels take down no notes?

The street across clearly visible

under the neon of the “24 hour service” ad
above a funeral home.
Next to it, until a few months ago,
there was a music shop
that closed down
with which the funeral home shared a wall
the same water pipes and the same gate to heaven.
But the coffins won,
the wide-shouldered coffins that narrow down
according to mummy moulds, not humans.
Wood of the highest quality, swears the owner
and pure silk inside, pleated like a stomach
that can digest even a bulldozer.

When asleep we’re simply five limbs. Starfish.

If you cut one, it will grow back.
Even a single limb could reconstruct us from the start,
negative spaces with five angles
that resist self-knowledge
like the dust-filled empty space in the music shop
waiting for a tenant.

IX

No one knows the reason or if it’s a matter of mixed genes

why I used to see what I wasn’t supposed to see – the end of things,
not a mystical gift, but like a clot
to the dark blood of the vein, I held on to reason
which circulates bottom-up
and not the other way around as we were told.
I used to start from the edges
and with a left hand or a croupier’s stick
gathered the balls and dice from the corners to myself;
not a winner, but not a looser either
watching the bet-makers.
And there’s nothing sillier
than a film watched in reverse
where after the climax, the protagonists are replaced by circumstances
and circumstances by minor characters, their tongues plastered
behind a single, fatal smirk.
Life and my short lunar calendar slipped away
like carbon paper sending off as much light as needed
skipping the details, contrasts and sharp colors.
Lunar time is short. Until the physical end, there are enough years,
– negative space.
What to do with them, when the verb has already been uttered,
conclusive, like the sentence in a Latin syntax
or more than that:
didactic.

With you

I will sit in an alcove of your mouth
As on a stone near a waterfall
Certain that the maelstrom of words will not spirit me away.

I will crouch in the corner of your eye
Like a lily sprouting in the shallows near the shore
With petals tiny so as not to distract.

For after all, what am I?
A frozen wave in space
Wrested from the sea of your chest,
You stretch your hands towards me in vain.

[Me ty, from the volume Preludë poetike, Tirana: Naim Frashëri 1990, translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

Self-defence

Sealed within this anguish
As in a tent of soldiers with no return
Where all of your attempts to escape
Inevitably rub against the chest of someone else
Lying next to you.

There is nowhere for you to go,
The stars like the fingernails of a sorceress
Fashion your fate in the smoke.

And you understand there is no other way out
Than to return to your nook in life
And count the holes in the old blanket
Which the hot embers of others left on it before you.

Here in the heavy air
We suck on bits of the unconsciousness of each one,
Of the unconsciousness of the others
Who like icebergs
Know no borders.

And all the time, in our souls,
Bewilderingly
The leucocytes on the rise.

[Vetëmbrojtje, from the volume Këmbanat e së dielës, Tirana: Lidhja e Shkrimtarëve, 1994, p. 45, translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie, and first published in English in filling Station, Calgary, 22 (2001), p. 57]

Annual Snowfall

In this town
The annual snowfall
Hanging on the rare and solitary trees
Brings nothing new.
It is merely
A veteran out on his daily stroll
Leaning on his wooden cane.

The same tales of war
Told a hundred times,
The same brand of cigarettes offered in friendship
And the same eyes accompany him
Dark and lazy,
And the dry rhythmic tap of his cane
Until his silhouette disappears
Into the long shadows of rooftops
Dripping
In terrible slowness...

[Dëbora e përvitshme, from the volume Antipastorale, Tirana: Eurorilindja 1999, p. 13, translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

Memory

There is no prophecy, only memory
What happens tomorrow
Happened a thousand years ago
The same way, to the same end
And my ancient memory
Says that your false memory
Is the history of a light-hearted bird
Transformed into a crow on a marble mountain.
The same woman will be there
The short path to reincarnation
A cage of black hair
Her generous and bitter heart
Like an amphora stuffed with serpents.

There is no prophecy, things will occur
As they have in the past
Death will find you in the same bed
Alone
Without worries, without shade
Like the trees damp from the night.

There is no destiny, only the laws of biology:
Trout splash in the water
And pine trees breathe in the mountains.

[Kujtesë, from the volume Antipastorale, Tirana: Eurorilindja 1999, p. 18-19, translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

The Woman and the Giraffes

The woman recalls
That she was once a member
Of a family of giraffes.
Their warm hides
Baked the air like bricks.
The strength of the giraffe lies in its neck,
That long and muscular column.
Its suffering also lies in its neck,
Bent over low, tropical trees.

One day the landscape was blotted out,
Gone were the heads, the slender knees, the spotted backs.
All that remained were the necks, the oblique necks of the giraffes
Confounded amidst blank paper
Like the boarding stairs at airports
Dragged off over the wet runway
When the planes have left.

[Gruaja dhe xhirafat, from the volume Antipastorale, Tirana: Eurorilindja 1999, p. 35, translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

Mutual Understanding

For my two-year-old daughter Lea

I cannot escape your sunflower gaze,
Do not judge me for what I lack,
A maternal instinct
Which like a water bottle grown cold
Ends up at the foot of the bed.

Understand me, I am like you,
Ever curious about what goes on between two people,
Just like you
I suspect it is something without a history,
Like an apple you bite into only once
And then cast away with no remorse.

[Mirëkuptim, from the volume Antipastorale, Tirana: Eurorilindja 1999, p. 45, translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

Chamomile Breath

We never spoke a word about death, mother,
Just as married couples never talk about sex,
Just as doctors never use the word "blood,"
Just as the mailman never needs to say "news,"
And frogmen never need to mention "air."

Yet fear adorns everything you touch,
The same way the gait of black harvesters
Causes the cotton fields to quiver.

In the morning
Your chamomile breath
Escapes like a lamb
From the sheep pen.
On the wrinkled pillow
Are unfamiliar white hairs,
And metallic black hairclips.

Do not expect it to arrive loudly
In motley dress
With bells attached to its elbows and knees
Like Carnival Clowns
Or Morris Dancers at the end of May.

You will never see the Carnival Clowns!

You will see a child with spindly legs and a thick crop of hair
Who had no time to grow up.
Did you never hear them say
That death is as close to birth
As two nostrils to one another
Letting out a deep groan?

[Frymë kamomili, from the volume Antipastorale, Tirana: Eurorilindja 1999, p. 58-59, translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

Always a Premonition

A premonition?... Or is the stench of alcohol
On the mailman's breath as he brings me a tardy
Letter?
A foreshadowing
Always appears before me
Like a long-thighed ostrich
In blithe departure.

Wherever it goes
It marks my tardy will,
There will always be a sign, some thick and greasy
Feather
Of its white prepotency.

By accident you wipe my kisses off your face
With the rest of the shaving cream clinging to your ears.
An intuition... another warning and
I ought to be careful... The termites are restless
When they fear to go out in the damp soil... Always a premonition...
I return exhausted to my daily routine
Like a vacuum cleaner sucking up yesterday's dust
And all sorts of other unpredictabilities
With a black cord wound around my feet.

[Gjithmonë një parandjenjë, from the volume Antipastorale, Tirana: Eurorilindja 1999, p. 75, translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie.]

The Old People's Home

A rusty-coloured gate, no name,
The passage to the old people's home.

Amidst the stones in the yard
The grass has withered
Under the weight of many canes.

Behind the curtains, on the windowsills
Dentures float
In water glasses here and there,
Like messages in bottles bobbing on the high sea
Never to be read.

The gate to the old people's home,
Bearing two sad numbers
Is always opened in silence
And hesitation
Like the Bible's much-thumbed pages.

[Azili, from the volume Palca e verdhë, Prishtina: Gjon Buzuku 2000, p. 68. Translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

Quite by Accident

And yet
I recognized
That beloved face
Lacerated by the green grille.
I felt it
And, taking a deep breath in the desert wind,
I smelled
That face,
With someone else's hand on my back.
The wheels of time broke loose
And my breast whined like a well
Like the metallic splash of an empty bucket
Plunging swiftly to the bottom.

But now I know we are strangers
And are here beside each other quite by accident
Like the photos of two accident victims
(from the crash of a large airplane)
On the front page of the daily news.

[Krejt rastësisht, from the volume Palca e verdhë, Prishtina: Gjon Buzuku 2000, p. 100. Translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

Electrolysis

Your kisses have long been singeing me like a wound
And your pristine body
Frightens me
Like the sheets in the surgery ward,
And your breath fades in a corner of my lungs
like a forgotten lily on a wintry park bench.

They have long been ashamed of my freedom
which every day yanks a stake off your fence
In the fire of which
I warm my shanks, blue with cold from flight.

My freedom... your freedom... our common freedom,
Defined once and forever, sealed within a jar.
An atmosphere of electrolysis. A muffled sound,
My soul being nickelled and yours waxing thinner every day,
Deserted by the ions.

[Elektroliza, from the volume Palca e verdhë, Prishtina: Gjon Buzuku 2000, p. 106. Translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

For As Long As

For as long as we mirror one another
Like this, even distorted
In silver spoons, on glasses and on bubbly bottles
On the board of a dinner party about to begin
Things cannot be going that badly.
Soon the soulless steam of hot food will hiss in,
And then...
The flood of death will be at hand.

[Për sa kohë, from the volume Palca e verdhë, Prishtina: Gjon Buzuku 2000, p. 109. Translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]

The Truth

The truth is someone else's privilege, when a soul
Approaches, lock your door, let it pass
As the Jews did, forewarned in Egypt,
When it accosts your lips, show no mercy,
Chew it up like a piece of liver
And force it back to its warm embitterment.
If you spit it out
I will be the first to haunt you,
My prayers will isolate you more and more everyday,
They will expose your broad shoulders
Undefended like cathedrals.

So recently banished, we are always too late
To stop and ask why we are here,
Why we were born wearing but a single leaf,
The sallow swipe of a purulent potter.

We search for a clean body to lean on,
All this would be a tale of thorns
Saturated in the sunlight.
Let me touch, there is only one truth,
The one which hands gently stroke,
The others are white clouds lurking
As ever in a Turkish steam bath.

The truth is someone else's privilege. Did you not notice?
We would never have withstood
The solitude of the water
Like two ancient stone angels
On the rim of a fountain.

[E vërteta, from the volume Palca e verdhë, Prishtina: Gjon Buzuku 2000, p. 130. Translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie]
